2018 Juneteenth Celebration

Ebenezer Poetry Ministry Event includes Open Mic

Members of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church joined with community poets and poetry enthusiasts at Ebenezer's 2018  Juneteenth Celebration Friday, June 15.  The celebration was one of the Ebenezer Poetry Ministry's 4 annual "Poetry & Praise Open Mic Celebrations."

The Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers opened the celebration with a rousing re-enactment of the "African village scene" inviting the approximately 85 guests to join in what became a lively opening ceremony of this year's Juneteenth celebration.  Attendees joined the ministry's Anointed P.E.N.S. and The Psalmists of Solomon in presenting poetry and song, connecting today with yesteryear through culturally relevant and often traditional call-and-response selections.  The celebration also included a lecture by renowned historian, C. R. Gibbs and a liturgical dance presentation by Ebenezer Liturgical Ministry members, Jean Law and Esther Garrett.  Poetry and spoken word presenters, both members of the church and community poets, offered poems that evoked images, sentiments and spirituality addressing the often misunderstood Juneteenth Celebration nd several contemporary issues of today.

The ministry's newly established musical component, "The Psalmists of Solomon" debuted at this celebration with performances by featured Psalmist, Christine Jenkins.  Culturally relevant attire and cuisine helped establish a "flavor of festivity" appropriate for the celebration, which was free and open to all.  The event included an Open Mic.

The next "Poetry & Praise Open Mic" celebration to be presented by the Ebenezer Poetry Ministry will be its annual "National Arts & Humanities Month Celebration."
